Kenyan Suspension Hurts Worldcoin's User Base. Kenyan Government Suspends Worldcoin’s Activities

Worldcoin, a project that launched just 10 days ago, has been suspended in Kenya, one of the few countries where its iris-scanning device, Orb, was available. Kenya was among the first countries to open registration for World ID and received a high number of sign-ups. Initially, Worldcoin listed 18 Orb-locations that would open in Kenya, but in the end, only one location was available at Kenyatta International Convention Centre. Despite tens of thousands of Kenyans flocking to the Orb to get their iris scanned and receive the World ID, the Kenyan government suspended all Worldcoin activities on August 2 due to the need to certify the absence of risks to the general public. Worldcoin officials haven’t yet commented on the news.

While only Kenya has officially suspended its services, other countries, particularly in Europe, have also expressed concerns. France and the UK have reported investigations into the project's data security. On the day of its launch, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published an essay highlighting four major risks related to the privacy of collected data and accessibility of the Orb device.
